Let’s talk beauty.
Caring for my skin is something I put extra attention to. Developing a beauty routine and finding the essential products your skin needs is important for achieving a healthy looking skin, with and without makeup. I’m often asked on Instagram about the beauty products I use, my workout routines and so on, so I though I’ll start sharing more of that here as well.
When it comes to beauty, I try as much as possible to use products that are made with natural ingredients, paraben-free, fragrance free and non-animal tested. I find it super important to stay away from nasty chemicals and to support clean beauty brands.
I’d like to start by saying that there’s no amount of products and facial treatments that will remove all wrinkles and fully transform your skin. Discipline in your skin routine and healthy habits are key! So I’ve listed some easy lifestyle habits as well as links to (my favorite) products that can help your skin look radiant. I hope you find them useful!
Disclaimer: I am not a beauty expert, and what I am sharing comes from personal experience. If you have any specific skin conditions, you should always consult with a doctor before using any of the recommended items.
- Get enough sleep
You can improve the appearance of your skin by sleeping well. It varies for everyone of course, I try to get between 7 and 8 hours of sleep. Concealer can do miracles, but nothing gives a glowy look and bright eyes like a good night of rest. If you want to add some extra care to your skin while you sleep, invest in a silk pillowcase. It helps your skin to keep moisture, in contrast to cotton that absorbs natural oils. Plus it is hypoallergenic. Just make sure you buy something that is actually made of silk and not of polyester. Many brands advertise as silk when they in reality made of synthetic fabrics.
- Drink (lemon) water
It is no news that water is important for the overall functioning of our body. In terms of beauty, getting an adequate amount of water everyday helps you get a healthier and younger looking skin. Those bags under our eyes and dry skin that make us look fatigued, can be a sign of dehydration. I start my day drinking a glass of hot water with lemon. Studies have revealed that vitamin C is an antioxidant that can improve skin radiance. Adding that extra slice of lemon not only makes your water taste better, it helps you battle the signs of aging too. So, drink up!
- Never go to bed with makeup on
I know, days are long and sometimes the only thing you want is to crash in bed as soon as you get home. Or, in the late hours, after a party, removing your makeup the last thing you worry about. Well, you should! By leaving your makeup on, you are not letting your skin breathe and repair overnight, which can result in breakouts and dull skin. Who wants that? So make it a top priority to go to bed with a clean face (also if you don’t wear makeup).
I’ve tried natural oils like coconut and almond oil as makeup removers, but they irritate my eyes. After exploring a few options, I’ve found a hero: the Swipe clean oil cleanser from Bybi. So good!
- Invest in an eye cream
One of the things I struggle the most is the dark circles and puffiness under my eyes. And though genetics play a big role on this, I’ve noticed that a applying a moisturizing eye cream, along with good sleep and staying hydrated, has helped me a lot! I’ve been using Kiehl’s avocado eye cream for a long time and I can totally recommend it!
- Massage your face
Just like the rest of your body, facial muscles require exercise to keep you looking young. Take a few minutes every day to massage your face. There are so many benefits to this: it stimulates the blood flow, it is a great way to drain and detox the skin, plus it firms and lifts. It also helps to absorb better the products you use in your evening routine.
In the morning, I like to use a Jade roller. Since jade is naturally cold, it helps to get rid of puffiness.
In the evening, after removing my makeup, first I use Khiel’s Ultra Facial Cleanser, The Ordinary Toning solution after, and I end my nighttime routine applying a few drops of organic chia seed oil. I take my Gua Sha or just my hands to massage. And now, it is ME time!
- Use a serum and oils to nourish your skin
Serums and oils are like supplements to your skin, they provide a boost of nutrition and hydration. It’s important to select the most appropriate one for your skin type, so take your time to find out what works best for you. This article from Skin Regimen offers a clear explanation of the difference between oils and serums and how to use them. My skin is quite dry, hence I always look for products that offer additional moisture. I use Hyaluronic acid and an oil I’m loving at the moment is the Strawberry Booster from Bybi Beauty.
- Apply sunscreen everyday
You hear it all the time and you should follow the advice. Sun exposure can cause great damage to your skin. I am seeing now the effects of those years when I was younger and didn’t care. Skin pigmentation is a pain! My favorite is Clinique’s mineral sunscreen.
- Exercise and eat healthy
Beauty comes from the inside out, so don’t expect miracles from creams and oils only. Several studies have shown that there’s a link between our diet and the way our skin looks. Include antioxidants in your diet, vitamin C, limit sugar and saturated fat and avoid highly processed foods. And the same goes for physical activity, blood circulation is not only important for our muscles, it is also crucial for our skin. Keep it up with those workouts!
