As the days are getting chillier and shorter, I feel quite sad that the summer is soon coming to an end. This summer has been absolutely amazing. Reaching record high temperatures that made everyone wear as few clothes as possible and pushed us all to swim in the city canals – they are clean enough. No doubt the best summer I’ve had since I moved here! That says it all.
Amsterdam is the best place in the summer
Though, having a good time here during any summer is not difficult. The days of warmth are more cherished here than anywhere else. The buzz in the city is festive. The terraces across the city are packed until the late hours. The city canals swell with boats and shine under the hot sun rays, the many bridges are dressed with beautiful flowers and everything and everyone seems to have a very relaxed pace.
The cyclists’ drenched long faces that you spot all winter long are replaced by ear to ear smiles… Everyone is joyful and surprisingly friendly. During the sunny days, the whole city has a new, refreshed energy.
The summer days are pretty powerful over here. Powerful enough to make many of us request last minute vacation days just to enjoy that exceptional hot day, to make us forget all the to- do’s in our agendas. To replace our quick bites behind the desk for lengthy, sunny lunch breaks. Or to skip your gym class or any other indoor activities (I did it quite a lot) just to go and spend the evening having a picnic in the park. The summer months simply bring lots of happiness!
If you have lived here for long or if you are located somewhere where the weather is crappy most of the year, you may understand the true meaning of a “good summer” and the nostalgia that we feel when those precious days are soon to be gone.
If you don’t live in Amsterdam and you are planning a visit, come in the summer!
Do you love summer as much as I do?
